Actually, making a backup of /etc is a good idea also.  I always copy it 
to /home prior to reinstalling.  It helps when restoring host files, 
samba config, crontab entries, etc. And if you have any user crontabs, 
you will want to backup /var/spool/cron as well.  The backups can be 
deleted once reconfiguration is complete.
