Here's how I do Mandrake upgrades these days:

mount -t iso9660 -o loop Mandrake-9.1-cd1-inst.iso /mnt/91-1
mount -t iso9660 -o loop Mandrake-9.1-cd2-extras.iso /mnt/91-2
mount -t iso9660 -o loop Mandrake-9.1-cd1-intl.iso /mnt/91-3
cp /mnt/91-1/Mandrake/RPMS/* /RPMS
cp /mnt/91-1/Mandrake/RPMS2/* /RPMS
cp /mnt/91-1/Mandrake/RPMS3/* /RPMS
umount /mnt/91-1
umount /mnt/91-2
umount /mnt/91-3
urpmi.addmedia -f 91 file:///RPMS/
DrakConf

Then deactivate the 9.0-related contrib, updates, Texstar, PLF, etc. The
only active source should be 91.

Then go to rpmdrake and start upgrading in chunks, getting more
aggressive about size of chunk as you go. Upgrade mandrake-release, the
kernel and XFree86 first. Then upgrade KDE. Then Mozilla, GNOME,
OpenOffice. Then server apps. If glibc and gcc and the devel libraries
have made it through without upgrading, upgrade them. Then anything
that's left. It will walk you through some very nice config file diff
wizards and let you decide what to do.

Finally, cross your fingers and reboot. If it all comes up okay, define
an updates_source and do your updates.

Now, login as root and move your /home/username directory to
/home/username-backup, then make a new empty /home/username directory
and login as username, then move important non-KDE or GNOME stuff back.
This is to clean out old cruft and to reset your font config, as every
upgrade I've done has cruddy fonts until this is done.
