This isn't really what you asked, but one thing you will probably want to do is not use kmail. It is sooooo slow on my older macine. Even on my newer (not a great one though) machine: kmail is like 10-20 seconds to startup (since i don't run kde) but sylpheed is ~.5 second to start...
