Angelo:
Converting an existing ext2 filesystem to ext3 is pretty simple. Open up a 
terminal as root and type:
tune2fs -j /dev/hda5
to set up the journalling. Now open up /etc/fstab in whatever editor, and edit 
the appropriate device(s) to show ext3 in place of ext2:
dev/hdb1 / ext3 defaults 1 1
Exit and save. That's it.
This _should_ stop the mandatory file checks. If it doesn't, you may have a 
problem.
