Anne i'm not clear what you actually intend to do, but my experience may be of interest to you. I rip DVD's using DVD::rip and capture video from my mini dv camcorder using the firewire port on my audigy sound card and kino. Both of these are easily accomplised with an Athlon 2100. A one hour dv tape occupies about 14GB of hard drive space in dv format and around a tenth of that in mpeg4.
To be of any use to me both types of material have to be recoded to mpeg4 and this is somewhat more challenging . Lord of the Rings (Fellowship of the Ring) took about 14 hours using transcode and xvid, similarly re-rendering any dv material (using kino's export function) is a lengthy process, I often let movies run overnight.
