Yes, you will have a problem if /etc is not on the "/" partition, for the 
reason that you state. Generally, the contents of /etc don't take up an 
awful lot of space anyway, as we're talking mostly text files here. On 
this 9.0 box, my /etc is a whopping 11 MB, and I have a *lot* of apps on 
this thing. If there is one particular file or subdir within /etc that 
takes up a lot of space, then you *may* be able to place it elsewhere and 
symlink to it; whether that will work will depend on which file/dir it is.
