Yes, they're still a pain in the keester, and a waste of money. ;)

OTOH, more of the misbegotten things have drivers available (from various
sites, like http://www.linuxant.com and http://www.linmodems.org) than was
the case not all that long ago. Stuff like voice is almost never supported
in Linux on these things, AFAICT.

The AOpen would probably be easier to get working than the PCTel, as it
uses a Conexant chipset, and the drivers are better for those. Still and
all, if you can come up with a few more loonies, consider an inexpensive
external *serial* modem, such as a Zoom (a brand I've had particularly
good luck with) - you'll be glad that you did, IMHO. It's hard to go wrong
with a hardware serial modem.
