Partly found the problem - it was not using aumix to change which 
channel is active.  However, I've got wood-block beating along with 
the sound when I change to rec.

Once I can get this sorted I'll short out the volume levels.  The 
front-panel input (audigy) is a lot less loud than the read panel 
one, though obviously a lot more convenient.
