I just dealt with a SBLive 5.1 on a friend's MDK 9.1 system, and I got the
best results by using the OSS driver (emu10k1), and enabling record within
aumix for the IGain channel *only*; this is a composite of the other input
sources, which can then be adjusted with their respective mixer controls.

This enabled his rear speakers to work, and the "OGain" control attenuated
the volume level for them thereafter. I found that IGain values of 30-40
gave optimal results on his setup, FWIW, but what mattered was that *that*
was the only control that had record set to "on"; a few other combinations
would lead to the clicking that Anne described. YMMV, HTH.
