cd into /var/lock/subsys and remove the 0 byte file called proftpd. 
That will get rid of the lock.

ah ha.  The curiosity here is where you got this version from.  The
version with mdk9.1 is 1.2.8-1.1.91mdk  and 9.2 has proftpd-1.2.8-4mdk. 
I'd highly recommend removing it and then doing

urpmi proftpd  and let MDK install it's version.  

The version you have is a RedHat rpm not an MDK one and as such doesn't
work.  There are just enough differences in file structure etc to make a
difference.  Also the RedHat one is an RC version ... (and doesn't work
to well there either I'm told, but don't know.)
