Chains vs belt....You'll get varying opinions. I used to have belt drive on my KBS Mk7. For AX I ran with a 120/24 gear setup (4.8:1). I did not ever have a belt ratcheting problem. If you use a front gear smaller than 24 tooth, you'll probably experience ratcheting problems...there just isn't enough belt/gear contact. The belt should be very tight for AX. My method for testing the tightness was to twist the belt laterally. I'd adjust the tightness so it was able to flex nearly 90 degrees from the flat, at rest position. If it's looser, you'll likely have a belt ratcheting problem in AX. If it's tighter, you can snap a belt on a bumpy surface. I switched to chain drive a few years ago for two reasons: 1. I broke a belt on the bumpy North Course at Forbes Field in Topeka during Nationals. Chains aren't likely to break. On a smooth surface this isn't likely to be much of an issue. 2. I wanted more flexibility in changing gear ratios. Chain sprockets are much cheaper than belt gears. And it's easy to adjust chain length.
Good luck.

I"ve started to change my gearing in my 97 phantom going from a 3.45 to 1 to a 5.0 to 1 to run autocross. The car will light the tires up some times but other times it I can still bogg it down in my other car with the higher gearing it is next to impossible to bogg it down. Right now I hear the belt slipping from a dead stop when I really get on the gas... I was wondering what is your thoughts about going to a chain. How tight can I make the poly can it be too tight.. I was told that the poly was faster for several reasons. The poly does not have as much drag as the chain.. Also the poly does not have as much vibration.
