Chuck, Neale and company !
Bill Sowers called me and asked if I would be one of three inspectors he
needed to make sure the "Pro 440" race he was prompting at the "Glen" would
be a "no questions asked ligit endeavor" !
His concerns, were - at that time - to do what was necessary to keep all the
entrants cognizant of the fact that after the race there would be a "minor
league" tear down that would take place at impound immediately after the
race and before any trophies or $$ would be awarded.
Our "tools" to accomplish this task were a "mic" to check the diameters on
the carb throats, a "burette" to "cc" the volumes in the cylinder, visual
inspections for milled heads and a look-see at the intakes and exhaust ports
for any grinding and polishing. We also looked to make sure we didn't have
any "dial-a-jets" on board ! My cell-depleted noodle can't remember if fuels
were tested or not !
Also, I have to mention that I took my sons Neale and Kyle and one of there
buddies - Greg - along with me. From where we lived in Balto to the Glen was
about a 5 hour jaunt. Prior to our trip, Greg had just purchased the latest
tape "Pink Floyd" had on the market and was terribly delighted to find out
our traveling vehicle had a tape player. When we finally arrived at the
"Glen" I had an insatiable desire to "roll a joint", walk around waving a
lighted "Bic", while at the same time keeping an eye out for a tattoo parlor
!
I think Dave Drissel won that event - the 2nd and 3rd place finishers names
will probably come to mind sometime later this week at which time I'll send
out an email !
Brian Yarnall - a 440 "hot shoe" at that time - and his wife were there and
provided my young savages with a couple nice meals and all the comforts of
home - well almost - no tape player !
The lads that accompanied me on that trip are now aged 31, 31, and 33 -
fortunately, none are suffering from any of the residual delayed stress
syndrome that may have been caused by 10 full hours of " Pink Floyd " !
Me ! That's another story - my wife - the lovely Miss Kim - continually has
to remind me to take out
the trash, lift the seat, roll up my windows and not to leave the keys in my
truck ! She's also great when it comes to locating the vehicle when leaving
the mall, always gets the right floor on the first try !
Was it the "Pink Floyd" or the exotic fumes inhaled while tiring to keep up
with those "front pack" guys way back when ??
Thanks for the "memory jog" - my synapses need that !!

Neale -
Having been a participant in that race, may age is starting to show, But
I
do recall it as good time, and without referring to results from the
event,
I seem to recall that there were 18-22 cars entered. As I recall Bill
Sowers was the force behind that event. At that time Bill was the
Northeast
representative for Red Devil and lived in New York near the Glen.

I remember when I was a kid I went to the Glen with my dad for a race. It
was a "pro" F500 race (in the sense that hey gave away finishing prizes)
and
it was very well attended. I always thought the idea of having one or two
of
these events per region (NE, SE, Central, etc...) would help to bring more
cars out. Just my .02 cents
