John - one important consideration that I haven't seen mentioned here is
the weight balance of the car. You've met George, are you of similar size?
Before you spend money on tires, get the car onto a good set of scales and
make sure your balance is right - it made a world of difference on my Red
Devil when we first started running it in Auto-X.

You'll also want to check the brake bias after you set the weight. Is
there a proportioning valve on the car? If so, start tweaking that AFTER
you balance the weight.

Finally, if you're buying new tires consider setting up the car with the
fat rims & tires all the way around. It dramatically improves the auto-x
performance. If you have the spilt rims it's pretty easy to mix & match
rim halves.
