Richard,
The problem with the 494Rave is the number of variations that were
made. If I recall, there are 5 different heads and 3 different
cylinders available for the 494Rave. Mixing and matching these parts
could open Pandora's box. It would be too easy to create high
compression versions, using "legal" parts. That was the main reason the
494Rave was not legalized. I see that there are two different
cylinders and 3 different heads for the 493. I don't know if mxing
parts would create a "hot" version.
Since it's relatively easy to identify the "proper" mix of parts for a
specific year motor, maybe the rules should specify that all engine
parts must be the "right" combination, as specified in the Rotax manual
for a specific sled. With some work on the wording, the intent to
prevent "hot" versions could be accomplished.

Does any one have any objections to opening up the allowable engines to
include 494 RAVE engines ?
As the 493 already has RAVE and with the weight reduction will it proceed to
kick ass in 2007, allowing the 494 with RAVE should not be an issue.
Allowing the 494 RAVE engine will make a whole bunch of more engines
available for F500.
