you are just thinking upside down the engine is still pulling the clutch belt it is just pulling on the bottom, not pushing the top

Lee Lee, the counter shaft rotates in the same direction as the crank, it has to "pull" on the top of axle sprocket in order for the car to go forward.... If you want reverse, then it would "pull" on teh bottom of the axle sprocket. You can shoot pool with a rope....
