Well, John, I just don't know exactly how accurate it is. In general in club racing the time have been within hundredths of a second to the AMB lab timing the track uses.
It is pretty simple. You change the software slightly from the road race configuration. Normally, it is a hands free device and display since it makes a recording any time you are going over 20mph for 5 seconds. Obviously you need to change this for solo. It can still be hands free, you just want to have it start recording at a lower speed (say 5mph) or just have it be manually activated. Then you take that data and download it from the car (CF card-cheap and easy) onto a computer. Then you define where the run started and stopped on the map that is drawn. From that point you can see pretty minor changes in course or compare entry/exit/segment times just like a traditional data logger. http://www.g2xtreme.com/software/autocross.htm The real plus for solo is that you don't run into any problems with wheel lock up or wheel spin. The GPS doesn't care. I was skeptical at first, but after the first weekend of using it, there was no doubt anymore. There are several devices available. DL1 from race technologies is the biggest player right now. Base price for a kit is in the ball park, but it does NOT have a display dash for the car. Sensors are cheap. The G2Xtreme (recently bought by MSD but keeping the same team in place) has been making GPS systems for the longest. Very robust kit for the money. Very nice dash display that I could take from and F5 to a spec miata or anything in between. Extra sensors however, are more expensive. There are a few others -Traqmate with the simplest software seemed "too simple" and didn't provide enough analysis. The "big" data people are getting in as well. CDS has a GPS addition coming. Pi is considering dropping the wheel speed sensors. AIM is looking toward GPS as the next step. But I guess I shouldn't have given away my big secret solo plans to come try to win again....Really it is most useful when two people can share data to really compare where things are working or show where more speed can be had. jim ----- Original Message ---- From: John Whitling <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, December 21, 2006 8:46:56 AM Subject: Re: [F500] Digatron or Mychron 4? Jim Are you saying you can define a start and finish line via GPS and then the system will time your runs? If so how accurate has that been? Jim Libecco wrote: >I use a G2Xtreme.
