Bike motors
Bent valves from overrevving
Burnt pistons from malfunctions in EFI adjustment for a modified motor
-or just an EFI malfunction from ignition noise or a defective sensor
Burnt valves from airbox problems
Difficult cam timing with chain and tensioners
Lots of valve seats (16 to 20) to grind and valves to replace to keep motor at its peak.

Tranny
Missed shifts possible
Bent forks
Overrevvs with bent valves from shifting mafunctions
Popping out of gear due to wear or just older designs (Kaw 900cc Ninja very bad)
Clutch replacements

Finally,
The annoying dentist drill sound of a mosquito-like high revving motor.
(compared to the steady music of a fine 2-stroke) :->

I think that in general you may be right about the simplicity issue Charlie,
particularly with respect to the very high revving 4 cyl bike engines.

However there may be relatively simple or even simpler engine installations
with certain modern bike motors.

Look at it this way.

1. Fuel injection - no adjustments
2. No primary or secondary clutch maintainance
3. No constant playing with the clutchs EVER
4. Perhaps NO RADIATORS, there are a couple of modern aircooled engines
that might work. Careful duct work required though
5. No piston seizures

Now I could be wrong about this but it is my opinion that F500 cars are
quite high maintainance race cars. All my friends in FFords or FCs are
amazed at how much time we spend at the track working on our cars. Most of
the work is just tweeking the clutches, jetting, suspension settings etc.
Endless playing with the car but still a pain.

I suspect that a modern FI MC engine will require less maintainance between rebuilds. However I am sure that rebuilds will cost more for a bike engine.
We completly rebuild our F500 engine once a year just before the Runoffs
(assuming we do not stick it) so rebuilds are pretty cheap. However if you
have a bad seizure or a crank failure you are looking at an entire engine.

When our crank failed 3 years ago at the Runoffs that cost a lot of $$$ to
repair bucause EVERYTHING in the bottom end was scrap. I think that engine
maintainance is fairly high in F500. Look at how many guys had engine
problems at Topeka, pistons, bottom ends etc.

My suggestions are that we go VERY SLOWLY on this entire issue & make solid
judgements on how to keep F500 as low cost as it is. It may very well be
that the 500cc 2 stroke is the best answer but let's look at other
possibilities.

In the meantime LET'S ALL RACE AS MANY NATIONALS AS POSSIBLE.

PS: How do we get the regional guys to come to Nationals?

Thanks ... Jay Novak

Chris,
Regardless of where one stands on this issue, I can't believe anybody on
this list is naiive enough to believe in that statement.
Good luck,
