Hello all!!!

This is just a note to wrap up the odyssey of
re-firing the rebuilt 494.

I mistakenly thought the engine was OK after getting
it to run with the rotary valve adjustment. It was
difficult to start, which I chalked up to the need for
a carb tweak or two.

The car got hauled to Memphis for a regional,
continued to refuse to start easily and didn't respond
to carb adjustments. Some fluids kept hitting the
engine pan and I was forced to a realization: the base
gasket was blown under the pto cylinder. Apparently,
it popped before the rotary valve adjustment while I
was flogging the motor with starting fluid out of
frustration.

After a phone consult with Jim Schultz and placing a
gasket order with Tony Murphy, the base gasket got
replaced and the motor started Friday evening. Almost
as important, it fired today (Sunday) on the third
pull after sitting for almost 48 hours.

The motor will get its final shakedown in a regional
at St. Louis on 3/25.

Thanks again to everyone who assisted,
Kenneth Kirkland
