Regarding the comment below .. Chuck Certainly you're entitled your opinion, regarding solo participants here. IMO the things that derailed the 493 launch center around (1) the poor conversion from metric to imperial measure of a Rotax dyno chart, (2) the lack of people willing to donate anything to do dyno testing, (3) the lack of anything more than subjective and incomplete data by the team that was given/loaned a 493 for testing.
One last thing .. I do not recall anybody in the debate proposing a 50 lb weight penalty to the 493, as the board did. Maybe the board actually thought about it and felt it was quite important to make sure that they didn't invalidate the 494s which even today are regarded as very good motors for the class.
