Dan (all),

This is the reason that I have offered some suggestions on how to get organized as a group of individuals interested in the pursuit of this form of motor sports using this technology and attempting to appeal to those who wish to limit their investment while maximizing the performance potential (i.e., bang for the buck).

I, too, opted for the digest mode and have been collecting the more prevalent topics:

Wheels
Rule Changes
Future of the class
Numbers
Engines
Bashing Cris
Getting bashed by Chris
Bashing Steve
Getting bashed by Steve
Advice from the class sages
Dumb responses by those who dispute the class sages
Those who want to change everything
Those who want to change nothing

You will NEVER get what you want if you "speak" out of so many sides of your collective mouth. If you don't speak clearly to SCCA, they will still speak very clearly to you. At this rate, eBay will be glutted with some really nice, really cheap, and really useless race cars in the not-so-distant future.

I sold all of my stuff (two cars, trailer, spares, and parts) and have "demoted" myself from driver to crew. I have no regrets. Many factors helped me determine why this was the right thing for me and the class situation was only part of it. My age, my work, my family, and my recently acquired 2002 Z06 were other determinants. However, I STILL wish to participate in the preservation of this class, it's foundation, the fundamentals of our objectives of competition, high-performance, and low cost. I would like the option of renting a ride in the future but, if there is no class, I'll have to rent one of those "other" cars. Ewe!

Hell, I"m older now, I never was all that competitive (and make no excuses for it), and quite honestly, it wasn't fun running alone down here in the SWD. I won a division championship but, have no one to thumb my nose at. My seasons ranged from tons of fun to no fun at all. I've been kicked out of some of the nicest track garages in the country for making too much noise and/or too much smoke. I've been made fun of by some of the most astute, expert, fat-bellied, rail birds in SCCA.

Formula S is no better place to race than ITE or Super Production. No one prepares cars for those classes. Those classes are for orphaned cars. Everything from a Buick-engined formula car (i.e., Indy Lights) to a Chevrolet-engined sports racer (i.e., Formula 5000, Can-Am, etc.). We are sitting on a class that can provide an opportunity for people who live on school teacher budgets to race cars; FAST cars, and still have enough money to buy groceries. Please, I implore you; do NOT let this slip away! Cut the bickering over whether the spec shocks come from Koni or HAL and get to the fundamentals of class preservation.

I have heard several good ideas on marketing. I have heard several good ideas on cost-cutting. I have heard several good ideas on parity management. I have NOT heard anyone say anything about goals, charter, organization, policy, planning, or direction.

Get organized before the need erodes.

SCCA needs to know how you feel. The more of you that feel the same way about this class, the more listeners in SCCA you will acquire. I feel strongly that you will get what you want if SCCA can hear you clearly.

Pardon the rambling.

I agree there is a lot of debating that is going no where, we need to all discuss the serious ideas and possibilities and get them down on paper. we also need to discuss the separation of the road racing rules vs. the autocross group. what we have here are 2 totally seperate groups using the same rules. So what we end up with is one group wanting changes and the other group countering it! Its hard enough to get any changes as it is without half of one group saying yes and the other half saying no, I think a proposal needs to be put in to split this up. The rules changes we need to allow our class to live has absolutely nothing to do with the autocross circuit and they should have no input on the rules or equipment that we are allowed to use, as such i could care less what they do in thier group. The proposed wheel change a while back should have came into play, in the long run it opens the door to a hell of a lot of choices for rims, rimstyles etc. obviosly there are a lot of people with multiple sets of 10" rims but i think most of the road racing class would like the bigger wheels, autocross could be left at 10 " then we could all sell our spares to them :) There are only a few things needing attention here, we should start concentrating on what we need to get into the board. changes for less maintenance and keeping the cost down.

I myself think the proposal should be worded something like this.

F500 series class engines shall be as follows:
Any 2 stroke 2 cylinder engine 500 cc's or lower is legal for competition when assembled to fit the following specification. Aftermarket parts may be used as long as they are designed to be direct factory replacements.

all engines may use any "Y" pipe, maximum length of assembly from factory mounting surface shall not exceed 8 " spacers between the "Y" pipe and cylinder are prohibited

all engines shall use a single chambered exhaust pipe with no restriction or separators, Separator defined as anything added to inside of chamber to simulate dual type tunable exhaust.

Maximum compression of any engine not to exceed 138 lbs (tested dynamically throttle open.)

bore and stroke not to exceed a total area of 499cc

Polishing or re-shaping of any porting is prohibited , with exception to a re-sleeved cylinder and engines under 449cc's as defined below

A. Re-sleeved cylinders may have the porting matched up as long as blend marks do not protrude more than .30 into casting of cylinder and original volume of port is not increased more than .1cc

B. Engines originally under 449cc from the factory may expand ports by x% total volume from original to compensate for overbored cylinders. (measured with fluid)

Induction systems:
air shall not be inducted into the engine at any point other than the inlet of the carburators or fuel injection inlet housing.

Carburators : round or flat slide may be used
a. Bores not to exceed 38mm
b. No part of the body or slide can be modified or reshaped from original.
c. The use of air flow improvement devices of any kind are prohibited (with exception to factory style air box)
d. powered air breathers are forbidden.
e. any carb adapter or boot is acceptable as long as maximum length does not exceed 2", angled boots are acceptable to facilitate leveling of carburators.

Electonic fuel injection:
May only be used with engine models that came stock from the factory with it.
Bodies of air flow and fuel injection unit may not be modified in any way.

Ignition sytems: Unrestricted

This would allow a lot of engines into the class
some of you may be against the efi thing but i have rode several different machines with efi and they are a bit laggy and unresponsive, i dont believe that this will give anyone an advantage.

Dan

Hey, Guys,
Please send your input right now. All these postings are nice but the CRB/BOD need to see the best positive ideas that we have come up with right away. They are seriously looking at MC motors for our class so NOW is the time.
Put up or Shut up --- Please.

Jim
