I'm as surprised as you are !
Do you think they should've stopped the race ? I think Marcus wished they
hadn't !
The best race in the rain I ever saw was at Summit Point when the skies
burst open while the F5's and the Vee's were out on the track going at it !
It was torrential and the red flag was thrown and all pitted to put on their
rains ! All did except one !
The race was restarted and - as usual - we expected to see the vee's to make
their push to the front of the pack -their suspension advantage clicking in
the rain !
All that is except Lennie Seitz - driving an older, extremely "stiff
suspended" Wormer F5" built by his friend Mike Wormer ! Lennie charged to
the front using an inordinate amount of car control that had to rank up
there with some of Senna's best work ! Slipping and a sliding and all the
while with each lap putting more distance between himself and the Vee train
trying so desperately to slipstream up to that Wormer !
Lenny won by a large margin and - of course - all those that had watched
this stellar performance rushed to met him at the weigh-in to shake his hand
and give him a hug while offering their congratulations and admiration for
such an amazing performance !
Then somebody asked "hey Lennie - why didn't you put on your rains ?"
"What rains ! I don't have any ! "
Ah - the Spirit of F5 !
Poor Kimmie - another DNF !
Maybe Massa after all ?

Thanks Neale and Richard !
I met Carroll Smith at a big trade show in
Cincinnati a number of years ago
along with Tony Tobias - the Business
Manager for "RaceCar Engineering
Magazine" ! Unfortunately I didn't have my
Carroll Smith books on hand for
autographs - what a treasure that would be !
I'm waiting for the F1 race from Germany being broadcast on SPEED - comes
on
at 7:30 - about 5 minutes from now ! The unfortunate wheel failure
suffered
by Louis causing him to start from 10th should make it interesting.
The early
part of my morning will be spent listening to the excellent
reportage offered
by Bob Varsha, David Hobbs, Steve Marschett and Peter
Windsor - as usual the
race will probably a "sleeper" - as most F1 races
seem to be ! Flash -
Varsha sez -the weather may throw a spanner into the
works ! ( my paraphrase
! ) If it rains we'll have an opportunity to see
Louis race in the rain -
another Schuey ???
Little did John Cooper know that his 500 cc powered
Cooper's would evolve
into what we call F1 today !
Turn up the volume and
watch the red lights !
Kimi, Fernando, Filipe, Louis or maybe Robert or Mark
??
All the best !
Gil

Richard, Gil is just talking from personal experience. He had road raced
F440's and F500's since 1978 until retiring in the late 90's(Red Devil's
and KBS's mostly). I know he has owned at least 9 that I can count. He
knows his way around an F500. Between he and I, we have cracked a few
frames. Carroll Smiths books are good reading for any racer.

Richard,
Carroll Smith sez
"go gray" !
Much easier to spot cracks - especially when talking about
F5's !
