Apologies for re-opening a somewhat old thread. After a mysterious
issue with upgrading Ubuntu 13.10 to 14.04, I decided that my feelings
of security with that distribution were an illusion. So I took the
leap to NixOS, although in a somewhat cowardly way. I'm running it
under Windows 7 in a VirtualBox VM. This is a great way for a newb
like me to experiment with a new OS with complete abandon, knowing
that if I really screw up I can just delete the VM and start over.
It's been a lot of fun and I'm learning a lot.

However, I still have a lot more to learn. The NixOS documentation is
excellent and the community is knowledgeable and friendly. But I'm not
at the point yet where I can fully bring up Factor under NixOS. I was
surprised at how far I got using the "brute force and bloody ignorant"
approach. I did a git clone of the Factor repository and followed the
readme instructions. I added packages to NixOS as I seemed to need
them and and re-ran "factor.sh update" until I got to a working
console listener that would run my standard Factor test: "355 113. /
." However, if I just try to start Factor from the command line, I get
a "Cannot open image file" error and, indeed, there is no factor.image
file in my factor directory.

So, Chris, if your offer still stands, I would really appreciate
seeing the examples and / or Factor environment you alluded to in your
previous message. It would probably have been easier when it was still
fresh in your mind over a month ago. Sorry. A related question: how
much work would be involved in creating a genuine Factor package for
NixOS?
