To your point Alex, I recall Maharishi discussing how impressions on the nervous system (and subsequent attachment) are made as consciousness grows more refined:
initially rock scratching rock, leaving a deep hard impression taking some time to erode, gives way to stick through sand, leaving a deep impression that is more easily eroded, gives way to stick through water, transient impression, almost instant 'erosion'. Gotta love it.
