In a long conversation this morning, Maharishi expressed in the most urgent terms that he wants the very top scientists in every country to take a stand for peace, and to play a leadership role in the Peace Government in their countries. He asked me to immediately enlist the support of our National Leaders and Peace Government Presidents in each country to achieve the following: Identify the most influential 3 or 4 scientists in your country. This might include: the Science Advisor to the President or Prime Minister the President of the National Academy of Science the head of some other national scientific advisory body a Nobel Laureate or Nobel Peace Laureate a famous University Professor Obtain their contact information (address, phone, email). Also, as a backup, identify the 1 or 2 most influential meditating scientists, or other scientists whose help we can count on. I am preparing a powerful packet with Maharishi's guidance, designed to inspire these scientists to take a stand for peace at this crucial time when the world is gathered at the UN in New York to review and renegotiate the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, and when the whole world is uniting against the Bush Administration's renewed nuclear development program. These compelling new materials are designed to make a very good, dignified impression, and to inspire as many of these top scientists to participate as possible. It is written in the language of science� "from a scientist to a scientist." I very much look forward to showing you these materials in just a few days. These powerful packets would ideally be hand delivered and presented by yourselves. But they could also be mailed via courier, and then followed up by phone to be sure they were actually received. The whole world is not "uniting against the Bush Administration's renewed nuclear development program." In fact, although the USA is spending an enormous amount of money to upgrade its nuclear arsenal http://slate.msn.com/id/2099425/ , the only groups expressing opposition to the weapons program are the usual groups of scientists who concern themselves with these developments, like FAS http://www.fas.org/main/content.jsp?formAction=325&projectId=7 The notion that handing scientists some pamphlets (which Hagelin calls "powerful packets") is going to make any difference is the just the usual naive stuff you hear from Hagelin (who has somehow convinced Maharishi that scientists care what TM movement scientists think). The Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty has slowed down nuke development, but since any signatory can withdraw from the treaty at anytime, it does not mean much, and there is no enforcement authority: "In sum, the treaty has three major loopholes: It lets countries get to the brink of nuclear weapons and then quit the treaty and build the weapons; it provides no penalties for quitting or violating the treaty; and it doesn't really require the big five to cut back on their nuclear weapons." http://slate.msn.com/id/2117940/ There is little chance that there is going to be a fix for the NPT, and in what way would handing out TM info to "big scientists" change this fact? Instead of the typical wishful thinking and useless gestures, the TMO should directly market TM to a populace that would welcome a stress reducing measure that does not make them dull in the process.
