Rick, A very good example of the "Pointing out instructions" appear in Ken Wilber's book "Eye of the Spirit" in the Chapter "Always Already". They have a profound effect on experience and also corrected several deep seated misunderstandings about what enlightenment is or isn't. JohnY ---Pointing out instructions cannot be understood as a separate thing from the underlying Buddhism that gave rise to them. The pointing out was part of the mind transmission of the Lama to the student, and now you see and now you see, ok good. Now hold to that. It was good enough to guide the student in their quest for the rest of their life without allowing the student to stray. The reason is that it has to do with the nature of the shunyata. A similar counterpart from
Maharishi would be him giving mind transmission of rishi, deveta, and chandas,
and the vedangas and then pointing them out, saying now you see, now you see,
now you see, you are the veda, you are the vedanga. Then you would never
need to guess again what was what. A sad thing about the Movement is like how my
old friend R had meditated for ten years in the domes and yet still didn't know
what transcendence was. That's like him looking in the mirror and mistaking
himself for someone else. One should at very least know their own spiritual name
and it's not Maharishi TM Sidha.
The Movement disregards light and
color and bindus and all those experiences that are had during meditations and
consequently no one in the Movement knows what any of those things are, and
consequently no one knows what the potential of their own awareness is. A
terribly sad consequence of this is that in the after life stage a person can
become terrified through misapprehension of the signs that occur and this terror
can lead to lower rebirth. While on the other hand becoming firm in the view in
life leads to possible liberation in life, almost guaranteed in the after life,
and at very least a better rebirth next time around with closer confirmation of
the true each time until view is rock solid.
At the very least having a real
master who knows what the signs are and what they mean is very helpful
especially for seasoned meditators, who have given up hope because the master
they previously had gave them false notions of what enlightenment was.
(Flying - not necessary at all - self knowledge - necessary).
The difference between TM
Techniques and liberation is the difference between being a cook and following a
recipe and being a chef who is the recipe.
