Well I am also living in the San Francisco area and you are correct that
many of the Indians are trying to emulate the western lifestyle
(DESIs). However I know westerners who are known as Indiaphiles who
don't truly understand what they are getting into. That's why I was
kind of musing (like others here) why anyone would bother to pursue
celibacy.

Several years ago I made the acquaintance of an Indian tantric who had
relocated to Bay Area. He turned out to be the real deal and after
several months I took initiation from him (I am also a former TM
teacher). Recently he gave me the go ahead to begin teaching yogic
meditation (this technique employs shaktipat) and perform other tantric
healings. Eventually if I am able to achieve the level of tantra
acharya I will be able to initiate people into tantra.

The beauty of tantra is you don't have to give up anything (well, they
want you to give up beef but that was easy) and continue to enjoy life.
And as I was saying tantrics will teach anyone. And getting back to the
point you raised about Indians my guru likes to lord the fact that his
principal disciple is a "white guy." ;-)
