Vaj writes (big snip) When one learns the Patanjali system it is traditionally taught in the context of Samkhya, consequently this fact--on discriminating Purusha--is taught right from the beginning.
Interestingly in the Shankaracharya tradition the yogic siddhis are side stepped completely and they insist that discrimination of Purusha (a la YS III:55) is essential but must be done without samyama. It's not a skill you are trying to attain but a shift in awareness, a new way-of-being. Tom T writes: It is my experience that Awakening is not a state of consciousness but a profound and complete understanding. It is a new way of being because your entire reference point and prior way of thinking has flipped in a 180 shift that is completely satisfying and bereft of doubt as to what has just been finished or completed. Tom T PS: It is my understanding that the way MMY had us do this used sanyama up to a point where it became self evident that the translucent intellect could take it the rest of the way. It is the Big and finest discrimination of the intellect. Very interesting.
