McCain is not Bush. He is not Mary Poppins (consultant woes, Keating 5) but he is not Darth Vader imitating Gomer Pyle either. He authored and fought for McCain-Finegold Voting Reform -- and has championed similar. He has a brain. He has some principals (not enough IMO, but some). Thus, that we are facing a choice of McCain or Obama IS huge progress,IMO. How far have we come from: a menu of Bush/Kerry, Bush/Gore, Clinton/Dole, Clinton/Bush, Bush/Dukakias....
