Whatever distortion is going on is going on anyway, so covering it up didn't help, did it? And now he's also got a reputation for not being straightforward. Face it, Feste, if he'd explained the association in detail, been 100 percent honest about it, it would be much more difficult to distort it. That he didn't do so made it look like he had something to hide, which is what energized those who oppose him. He could have made it a nonissue. Terrible, terrible judgment.
