Well people died, including his girl friend and another friend when 
a bomb they were making blew up.  Also, I believe the police officer 
killed was guilty of just being in the wrong place and the wrong 
time. But as Ayers said, you just need to "put these actons in the 
context of the times".  That, I gathered is his defense.  "In the 
context of the times, these things needed to be done", or can be 
justified in this regard.
