the Pentagon reports 1740 total deaths, but also 6708 wounded in action, returned to duty within 72 hrs. and 6482 wounded in action, not returned to duty within 72 hrs. The 9,000 number may be the addition of those killed plus those severely wounded; limbs blown off, blinded, etc. Another estimate puts those treated for illness, wounded in action, and accidents at ~30,000. 8-10% of the evacuated wounded are treated for psychiatric problems. Also 48 journalists killed, ~250 contractors killed, between 22787 and 25814 Iraqi civilians killed.
