Judy Stein quotes: > > "Stage 1 Punishment/Obedience - Consequentialism. > This stage is characterized by avoidance of > punishment and unquestioning deference to power > as values in themselves. Simple Hedonism." > snip > stage 7, "where > univeral concern for humanity is combined with > a concern for all nature--identification is > broadened to the universe itself, care is held > for all nature in a manner such that one cares > for the universe around him just as another > cares for his own body"
I like the way the first stage is a primitive form of the last. In Stage 1, I avoid hurting you because I believe karma will cause my actions to come back and bite me. In State 7, I avoid hurting you because you are an extension of me, and to hurt you would be to hurt myself. In both cases, I try not to hurt myself. The difference is that the first stage's ethical behavior is motivated by fear, and the seventh stage's actions by love. Anyway, that's how it looks from whatever stage I'm in. - PJG To subscribe, send a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Or go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FairfieldLife/ and click 'Join This Group!'
