*Some* who were there *thought* he was poisoned. Or said they did. As Shemp just pointed out, it's quite common when an important figure dies unexpectedly for there to be all kinds of conspiracy theories about foul play. This is especially the case when the theories can be made to point to someone who has been the target of resentment for other reasons. Another point: Lawson said awhile back--not sure where he got the information--that Guru Dev was thought by some to have died of *food poisoning*. If this was the case, it's easy to see how that speculation could have morphed into a rumor that he was *poisoned* intentionally.
