You need to read the Valis Trilogy by Phillip K Dick, the Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldridge, and a couple others. PKD was a natural paranoid from the hippie era who saw the complete destruction of human volition in empire, while holding out hope in the most ordinary and often squalid of circumstances. Thanks!
