Watch the movie "Food, Inc." Hormones have not been abandoned in the US
because they make chickens grow with larger breasts to market size in
far less a time hence being more profitable for the farmer. This growth
hormone has been considered as contributing to obesity in the US.
As that movie shows, chickens grow so fast and so fat that they can't even
walk. They take a step or two and collapse on their feces-covered floor. The
situation is extremely unhealthy not only for the chickens, but for those
who consume and raise them.
