While I don't necessarily disagree, do you think this tendency
might be the result of an inability to see normal, everyday
humans -- devoid of gold and robes and the trappings of
royalty -- as divine?

Jesus and Buddha were just ordinary guys.  Would Maharishi
have been able to recognize them as being also divine with-
out the finery?
