Actually akasha is quite correct, and you are
entirely wrong; she was not considered a joke in
the California election by any means.

No, in fact they do not.  First of all, she was never
a conservative Republican; she was always socially
liberal--pro-choice, pro-gun control, pro-gay rights.
Second, she is not now a liberal Democrat, she's a
registered Indpendent.

Her views did change on the role of government; 
previously she had assumed the private sector could
solve major social problems, but she realized that
an activist government was needed.  That's when she
switched from Republican to Independent, and she
has maintained this position ever since.

And she drives a Toyota Prius, not an SUV.
