He is.  Seen him live many times.  But he's boring.
Clapton, as wonderful technically as he is, tends
to fall into "ruts" on his extended solos.  He starts
well, but doesn't always take it somewhere.  Zappa
kept doing these things to keep Clapton from falling
into ruts -- he'd change the key, or the time signature,
and take the whole song somewhere other than where
Clapton was thinking it would go.  He'd get this
puzzled look on his face, like, "Where did *that*
come from?" and then he'd smile, and follow along.
It was a very neat evening.  They obviously respected
each other a great deal, and were having fun onstage.
