Please, all of you, keep in mind that you are getting George Will's words second-hand from me, and, at best, my words are going on memory and paraphrased. The point I was trying to make was that war, with all its horrors, is sometimes necessary. But to pull back from a war because of the horrors of war is sometimes a worse evil than sticking with it and succeeding because the alternative can be worse than the war itself. In defense of that stance, I invoke, as I have often done in the past, the American experience of Vietnam. Horrible as it was, the purpose was to stop the spread of something MUCH worse than the war itself: life under communist rule. And the proof of this was that once the anti-war American left was successful in getting the U.S. to pull out of Vietnam and enable a communist victory, that's when the real suffering started. More people died in southeast Asia in the two years following the U.S. pullout than in the entire 14 years of U.S. involvement in Vietnam. ------------------------ Yahoo!
