Re "The British . . . went all over the globe plundering everyone's natural resources and offering only civilization in return.":
I do think that if the ideology of multiculturalism and multi-ethnicity can overcome its many problems and finally have a happy ending then the most likely place that could happen is Britain. One reason is that the Brits are extraordinarily tolerant and open-minded (far more so than the French!). But another reason is that we had the British Empire - the world's first stab at globalisation. For example, we've had centuries working alongside the peoples of the Indian subcontinent. Whereas in the past we went to them; now Indians are coming to us. Whereas in the past there was a tiresome presumption of British cultural superiority over Indian society (which was valid in *some* respects); now there is a general recognition that Indian culture has valuable lessons to teach us westerners (like meditation!). But we're all on a learning curve and it's just so easy for racists and chancers to exploit the inevitable growing pains that arise. It's the lack of a calm, rational, evidence-based debate on the issue of mass immigration that has led us to today's confused reactions. - and the unprecedented numbers of immigrants arriving on our shores.
