Enlightenment is the living experience of being fully present; 
creating and recreating our reality, moment by moment, and taking 
full responsibility for it.

A pragmatic definition for 'higher states of consciousness' are 
those states of consciousness that move us towards enlightenment. 
So, we can have experiences of 'higher states of consciousness' and 
remain unenlightened.
