I once read about a study in which a large number of subjects (at least a thousand) were "hypnotically regressed" to past lives. Only a handful, apparently, remembered lives in identifiably historical times. The great majority recalled lives as "brown-skinned people working in the fields." (A little later than hunter-gatherers, but close enough.)
Putting it in an evolutionary context, the vast majority of people that ever lived were hunter gatherers.
