But bear in mind that there is always a far lower number of homicides than of other violent crimes, so a "spike" in the percentage of homicides over a short period can look more significant than it is; it doesn't necessarily represent a trend. The study discusses this in some detail. Even from the raw FBI data, there was a sharp drop in the number of assaults and rapes from what would have been predicted.
