E-mail from the FF Satsanga, .. This research evidently is based on aversion to suffering and confronting the content of the mind. That as there is something uncomfortable, that as we are confronted with pain or sorrow then somehow that is inherently evil, that there is something problematic about that. That if there is something in-equanimous in the emotions then that is somehow ‘dissociated’ in life.
Outright mental illness aside, the article also speaks to the problem of the mind ( the researcher’s too?). It actually speaks the case of why we do need to meditate, the problem of the active mind and over-mentalized understanding. People certainly are sold on meditation now in the modern era as a curative for mental health and some people come to it hoping to be healed of things in their life. When you start this process you are going to confront the very nature of the mind which is erratic and routy and its contents which as Rohr in his linked talk points out are humiliating with compulsive thoughts, anger, paranoias. Just because it is in the mind does not make it real or true. It can also just in the mind, something the mind is experiencing, conjured up. We are so mind identified, and body identified, we all think way too much. This researcher is expressing this thing of ‘over-thinking’ of why would something (meditation as something) be of value. They talk and categorize about meditation in terms of experiences, somatics and things, and it can also just be in the moment. It is like, “I feel unhappy now, meditation is no good.” Where do you look for its cumulative effects in research like this? Where do you see strength, resilience, courage, equanimity, simplicity in clarity of thinking, creative thinking? How much of that is in the result and not the moment? Do you, “..do a vacuum cleaning and do you open up the bag, or just clean? To what end? The idea in meditation is that consciousness is the enduring experience, not content. https://www.madinamerica.com/2017/06/new-data-adverse-effects-meditation-mindfulness/ https://www.madinamerica.com/2017/06/new-data-adverse-effects-meditation-mindfulness/ .. Bhairitu offers: The problem is that meditation is often taught wrong. Other paths often just use meditation as a utility, you meditate when you fee like or need. Advice from my tantra guru was, "if you don't feel like meditating then don't as nothing will be gained." Meditation in general is used as a tool to calm the sympathetic nervous system, the part of the autonomic nervous system we use for activity. Once calmed the thoughts which the sympathetic system triggers slow or stop just leaving an experience of pure consciousness. But also keep in mind that one person's meditation technique may not work for another person. Though many may need calming other may need stimulation. Ayurveda recognizes this and that's why there are different mantras for each dosha. Gurus would often observe a student and give them an appropriate mantra for their constitution. And some paths give a student a mantra for calming and one for stimulation, use as needed. ---In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, <dhamiltony...@yahoo.com> wrote : This researcher is clearly very smart but this paper is all mentalization of the mind, the mind’s content and aversions and straight to allopathy.
