Not true, as anyone who has ever attended an Ivy
League school, even for a short time, would know.
I attended such a school for one year a long, long
time ago and they've been badgering me for money
ever since, as an alumnus. :-)

Or you could take Merriam-Webster's word for it:

Main Entry: alum·nus
Pronunciation: &-'l&m-n&s
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural alum·ni /-"nI/
Etymology: Latin, foster son, pupil, from alere to nourish -- more
at OLD
1 : one who has attended or has graduated from a particular school,
college, or university
2 : one who is a former member, employee, contributor, or inmate

If we go by definition two, Maharishi could have
been an inmate in the Psychiatric ward of Allahabad
University and still be considered an alumnus. :-)
