I am not sure its a new twist. I heard rumors of it in the early 70's. Doesn't make it true, just not new. As far as diverse sources, how many original eye-witness sources were there --at most only few, of these a) how many of these people talked b) had a motivation to tell the full truth c) had a motivation to spin it. How many of the diverse sources simply passed on things they heard . But then what does it matter? Possible sex, drugs and rock'n'roll in the 60's (OMG!) in a defunct ashram of a now defunct spiritual org by a defunct band almost 40 years ago. What strong klesshas hold the mind fixed on THAT.
