Just as a taste :-), read the story of Emily the cow:

http://www.peaceabbey.org/memorial/sacredcow.htm

Basically, how it went was that Lewis was having a
tough time finding money to pay his mortgage. Being
completely non-profit organizations, the Peace Abbey
and the school were in dire straits, and were on the
verge of being evicted because Lewis couldn't raise
the money to pay the now-overdue amount owing on his
mortgage.

Emily the cow was in a slaughterhouse, waiting to
grace someone's dinner table, and had a better idea.
She jumped over a rather high fence and escaped.
She also managed to avoid capture for some time,
and wound up wandering onto, of all places, Lewis'
property. Lewis refused to give the cow back to
the slaughterhouse, and turned it into a media
event. The slaughterhouse finally relented, and
Emily got to live out the rest of her life as a
pet there on Lewis' property.

The kicker is that some Hollywood type got wind
of the story and came to Sherborn and offered to
pay Lewis for the rights to the story, in case
they ever wanted to make it into a movie. The
amount offered was the same amount that Lewis
needed to pay off the mortgage and get the wolves
away from the door.  Go figure.
