Also, after the invasion of Iraq, Syria started supporting fundamentalist groups inside its
own country in order to create a radically anti-american civil defense grass roots base. The
rank-and-file moderate citizens of Syria are not exactly thrilled with their government's
actions around the world and in-country and hardly blinked in protest at the invasion of
Iraq. This prompted the government to encourage fundamentalist groups within the
country that had heretofore been persecuted. An ironic side-effect of the invasion.
Spair, Syria and Iran have had strong ties for decades now and Syria has been a strong backer of Hezbollah since they invaded Lebanon.
