Not very.
M's Ashram wasn't the only one in Rishikesh, just the newest and most modern at the time. Every Ashram has to raise funds to maintain their existence. M was just very clever, he got a bunch of wealthy westerners to finance his, while most of the other Ashrams still depended on wealthy Indians to support theirs.
