Actually, if a certain copyright/trademark law hadn't been passed in the U.S. Congress, directly as a result of lobbying by the Walt Disney Corporation, you wouldn't have had to ask their permission to use Bambi because it would have been in the public domain. But the Disney company successfully lobbyied the Congress and they extended copyright/trademark protection beyond the time which marks such as Bambi and Mickey would have otherwise expired.
